What are Persona Dolls?
WHAT ARE PERSONA DOLLS?
Persona Dolls are handmade rag dolls that are made to look like real children. During training, each doll is given an individual name, a family background and a life story. Through this ’history,’ the doll becomes in some ways like a real child.
The children identify with the doll and are then able to relate their own experiences to the experiences of the doll. Through the doll, the children are able to talk about any feelings that may be difficult for them to talk about, such as being angry or sad. Through talking, the children develop an “emotional vocabulary” and the feelings are made more manageable.
WHAT IS EMOTIONAL LITERACY?
Emotional literacy forms the building blocks for emotional intelligence later on in life. It means being in touch with our feelings and being comfortable with them (just like someone who is literate can speak, write and read).
An emotionally literate person knows how to manage their feelings in order to communicate with others in a positive and appropriate way. They are also able to understand another point of view and cope effectively with other people’s feelings.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF EMOTIONAL LITERACY?
Emotional literacy helps children in all aspects of life. It helps with decision-making in life and encourages greater control of their moods. An emotionally literate child will find it easier to manage both in their social and academic lives. Children also show improved self-worth and self-acceptance and therefore have higher self-esteem. Later on, this will assist in resisting peer pressure. In the long term, emotional literacy helps with future relationships and careers.
